Electricity cables arrive at Electricité du Liban on big, wooden cylinder-shaped stands. Usually, these rolls end up in a garbage dump after the cables run out. But if you ask Nicola Santini, an Italian architect committed to recycling materials he uses, the stands can be used as tables, and anybody who’s ever been to Demo pub in Gemmayzeh probably sat at one of them.

Recycled architecture and design has been an alternative to conventional design for around five decades. Taking an eco-friendly approach when building a house brought to life ideas found only in sci-fi stories: walls made of old beer bottles and houses built using cardboard, used car tires and straw bales. Architects with a green mindset use materials perceived to be junk, such as pallets, boards, sinks, glass, re-used or modified old furniture, tires and even metal, in their projects.And although Lebanon is far from topping the list of countries when it comes to recycling, Santini and his two partners, Italian Pier Paolo Taddei and Lebanese architecture professor Charbel Maskineh of Notre Dame University, are trying to change their clients’ mindsets one step at a time.

Concept: doing a brand new bar using zero km recycled material and furniture as much as possible.
Materials: Recycled wood from existing wooden furniture in the bar, recycled stools, tables, chairs and sofa, recycled pallets.
Strategy: scratching to re find original materials and textures.
Recycling and modifying existing furniture in the bar: wooden stools, chairs, wooden bar counter.

Recycled Surface è una seduta-vassoio che cambia aspetto in base alle disponibilità di materiali di recupero Poltronova. La struttura e la forma sono ridotte ai minimi termini per evidenziare il ruolo di contenitore.
I materiali disponibili per il riempimento al momento della realizzazione del primo prototipo sono: strisce di gommapiuma, listelli in legno, tondini cavi in metallo e pomelli in legno.
I pannelli di riempimento che formano la superficie di seduta e schienale sono intercambiabili.
La struttura base è in “multistrato di recupero Poltronova” grezzo.
L’idea è che il “cliente-consumattore” scelga i colori e i materiali tra quelli disponibili al momento nel magazzino e crei la seduta secondo i suoi gusti e desideri.

As the world’s cities continue to expand, with more than 50% of the current population urbanized, urban form becomes increasingly spotty and disconnected. Despite their greater size and productivity, cities generally have not made a corresponding investment in the public realm. The aesthetic, social, and environmental problems of low-density sprawl beg for attention. This year’s Syracuse Architecture Symposium offers the theme of "Civic Space in Scattered Cities" to explore the possibilities of creating culturally significant forms in the urban hinterlands of Europe and North America. Three distinguished architects and urbanists will present projects and strategies that address the spatial and social anomalies of the fragmented city. Their differing approaches to formal, technical, and sociological solutions will lead to a lively debate about civic identity in the increasingly diffuse metropolitan city.

La settima edizione di ROTTE METROPOLITANE, progetto promosso dall'Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Firenze, presenterà i suoi "umidi" risultati il prossimo 12 marzo 2009, alle ore 18, alla galleria SESV http://www.sesv.it/ dell'Università di Firenze, Facoltà di Architettura.Il tema proposto dal curatore Marco Brizzi, Firenze è sommersa, insiste sull'osservazione di un ambiente considerato inospitale per gli "organismi creativi" presenti nel capoluogo toscano. "Firenze è sommersa -scrive Marco Brizzi nell'introduzione al catalogo-, così come fu dopo la tragica alluvione del novembre 1966 e come la vide Superstudio, in una delle più efficaci visioni che l'architettura radicale ha offerto alla città che di quell'ultimo movimento d'avanguardia fu la culla. Incapace di liberarsi da una opprimente coltre che tende a soffocare sul nascere ogni intento creativo, a limitare ogni atto di vitale espressività. Eppure in questa città accadono delle cose...". A partire da qui, un gruppo di osservatori (Giacomo Bazzani, Elisa Biagini, Nicola Santini e Pierpaolo Taddei, Carlo Scoccianti, Gianni Sinni) ha indagato la realtà artistica metropolitana in cerca di elementi di creatività e capacità progettuale presenti nell'ambiente fiorentino.Due mesi di lavoro per agitare le acque e per osservare cosa succede nelle zone più visibili ma anche in quelle più recondite della città di Firenze. Ne è emerso un panorama eterogeneo e multiforme, fatto di tante figure isolate, talvolta organizzate in autonomia per resistere all'ostilità dell'ambiente. Le figure osservate tendono a descrivere un microcosmo fortemente animato e brulicante. Esse abitano la città ma sono sovente portate a uscirne per ricercare nutrimenti e manifestare altrove le loro abilità.A valle della presentazione del 12 marzo, una serie di eventi e di iniziative (scarica il programma) promosse dagli osservatori che hanno contribuito al progetto organizzato da Image http://www.image-web.org/ coinvolgerà la città di Firenze.
